Is Schlabach Kidding About the ND-FSU Match-up?

For those who may not know, Mark Schlabach is a college football writer for ESPN. He recently wrote an article ranking all the bowls games. Notre Dame vs. Florida State came in at number 8. This is a excellent ranking considering that the Champs Sports Bowl is probably not the 8th best destination for teams during the bowl season. It is Schlabach comments that has many people baffled.

Under his the ranking Schlabach states the following:
"The two traditional heavyweights had disappointing records after entering the 2011 season with very high expectations. But both schools have storied traditions and have enough young talent to enter 2012 as BCS contenders. FSU won six of its last seven games; the Irish won four of their last five. The winner of this game gets a top-three preseason ranking." (emphasis added).

Any sane person would agree with Schlabach until that last sentence. I am in no position to for Florida State. However, Notre Dame is in no position to be a top-three preseason team. Notre Dame has question marks on offense with an unsettled Quarterback situation, the loss of star Wide Receiver and Running Back, and a new right side to the Offensive Line. On Defense, Notre Dame will at least have to replace most of its secondary. They also could be replacing Manti Te'o. Not to mention key players Darius Fleming and Ethan Johnson.

Notre Dame may be a pre-season top 25 team with a victory but they certainly will not be a top 3 pre-season team. I'd love to think so though.

  1. He has obviously been at the cider early. A crushing victory led by Hendrix might get us top 15; but, top 3, no way.

  2. I can't believe so many ND fans took the bait on this one. ND and FSU get ripped nationally for always being overhyped in preseason polls - this is sarcasm guys.

I would love for Kelly to get some year 3 magic, but look at the changes we'll be making in the secondary, losing an All-American wideout, and our schedule and realize that we might be a stretch for a top 25 team next year.
