Kelly Attacked By Cleveland Plain-Dealer Cartoon

Jim Tressel's Job Status: Editorial Cartoon by Jeff Darcy
On Friday edition of the Cleveland Plain-Dealer, Jeff Darcy provided an editorial cartoon of the situation surrounding Jim Tressel's current predicament. In defending Jim Tressel, he brought Notre Dame's Head Coach Brian Kelly in the argument.

First of all, regardless of how the viewer feels about Brian Kelly's involvement in the October incident in which a videographer was killed, attempting to making light of the death of Declan Sullivan is a classless move by Jeff Darcy.

According to one comment, "I almost choked on my coffee when I saw that. How ignorant is Darcy to the fact that a young man lost his life. I hope the boy's parents never see this, it would break their hearts."

Jeff Darcy responded to the comments by stating, "Anyone who thinks this cartoon trivializes the death of that young man has completely misread the cartoon, the point of which is the complete opposite. The cartoon is directed at the lynch mob out to hang Tressel. If anything it is suggesting elements of the Tressel controversy are trivial compared to the death of the student. The cartoon does not say it's o.k. to cheat! A cartoon I did earlier this year in fact blasted Tressel's actions. The cartoon doesn't say Tressel shouldn't be fired but it suggests perhaps Kelly should be too. Which is exactly what Fox sports columnist Jason Whitlock said should've happened to Kelly last year. People keep calling what happened at N.D. an accident like it was a fender-bender. Whitlock, in calling for Kelly's firing said it should be treated like a DUI in which the driver or the passenger in the other car that was hit was killed."

In addition to be classless, Darcy clearly has not checked his facts. Kelly was found not responsible by OSHHA and an investigation by Notre Dame. Rather, he was found to be part of a group of people who collectively failed to protect Declan Sullivan. The family of videographer accepted the findings of the investigations and have not called for Kelly's firing.
