Recruiting Update: Thursday, August 2, 2012

Generally speaking, one day before Notre Dame kicks off fall camp, Irish fans are wondering why Notre Dame has less than ten in commitments. But, with 18 recruits already on board, Notre Dame fans might start talking about how bored they are with recruiting. Notre Dame will most likely close out with 5 to 7 more recruits. Here is an update on where they stand with some of their remaining targets.

Moore Announces Top 5
L.J. Moore announced his top six schools via Twitter yesterday. The list was Notre Dame, UCLA, Cal, Oregon State, Arizona State and Washington (in that order). Moore has official visits set up to Notre Dame (09/21/2012) and California (10/06/2012). According to Rivals.com, L.J. Moore is the 19th best safety in the country and the 213th player overall. Mike Denbrock has been Moore's primary recruiter. The Safety from the Fresno, California area has yet to visit Notre Dame but maintains them as his leader. Moore could close out Notre Dame's defensive back recruiting if he commits to the Irish on September 22, 2012 under the lights of Notre Dame Stadium. It would be a solid pick up for the Fighting Irish. Moore ranks as the 17th best cornerback and the 233rd player overall on 247Sports.com. ESPN.com has him ranked the 26th best cornerback and Scout.com has him as the 20th best cornerback. Obviously, L.J. Moore would give Notre Dame flexibility of a tremendous athlete who could play both cornerback and safety. However, a commitment will not come until he visits. Could Notre Dame fill up before then?

Allen Visits ND
Devon Allen recently visited Notre Dame while also visiting Ohio State and Michigan. Wide Receiver is truly the only offensive position where the Irish actually need another commitment.  Allen ranks as the 15th best receiver overall and the 129th player overall. At 6'1'', Allen would most likely play in the slot for Notre Dame. Getting Allen back on campus for an official visit looks like the best way to land his services at receiver.

Muhammad Still in Play
After the commitment of Jamel Jones, 4-star running back from Texas, it is unclear whether or not Notre Dame will continue to pursue Khalfani Muhammad. Muhammad could be a good compliment to what Jones brings to the table. However, with limited scholarship available and other needs, Notre Dame might pass on Muhammad. If Cierre Wood returns for his 5th year, Muhammad would be the 7th running back on scholarship. Notre Dame could be stocking up on the shifty running backs who could also play slot receiver similar to Theo Riddick. Answers could actually come from how Notre Dame performs on the field this year in his recruitment. If Notre Dame uses this position well, they will keep using similar bodies.
