Should Have Picked Floyd

Irish Sports News wrote about 3 months ago about the importance of drafting Michael Floyd over Justin Blackmon for a multitude of reasons. This past weekend Jacksonville Jaguars fifth overall selection Justin Blackmon was arrested on an aggrevated DUI charge. Blackmon was driving with a .24 BAC, three times the legal limit.

Michael Floyd had a highly publicized DUI incident before his Senior Year that made many GMs question taking Floyd in the Top 10. But in reality, Blackmon had a more severe incident that should have raised more red flags. Blackmon was caught going 92MPH in a 60 zone. In contrast, Floyd had an incident that was handled properly. He was forced to live in a freshman dorm and seek help for his issues. By all accounts, this allowed Floyd to recognize his goal of playing in the NFL.

NFL GMs were posed with a choice between a reformed individual and an individual who was not properly handled. Unfortunately, the Jaguars chose the later. Neither incident is positive and both should be punish to the fullest extent of the law. But, the way the Notre Dame administration handled the Floyd situation, it allowed him to become a better individual.

Now, Blackmon is facing a low-ball offer on his contract and a possible suspension from the commissioner. This is might be "Monday Morning Quarterback" but Jacksonville is probably wishing they selected Michael Floyd right now.
