Notre Dame-Stanford in China?

According to a New York Times report about the Pac 12, Notre Dame and Stanford have discussed playing the 2013 game in China. Next season, Notre Dame will travel to Ireland to battle the Midshipmen of the Naval Academy. This would be the second time Notre Dame has played outside of the country. This game was also played in Ireland against Navy. The Irish beat the Midshipmen 54-27. Playing outside of the country would not be out of the ordinary for Notre Dame. But, the distance from South Bend to Dublin and South Bend to Beijing is quite different. In fact, South Bend to Dublin is only an 8 hour flight covering 3626 miles. South Bend to Beijing is a 14 hour flight covering 6636 miles. The concept just seems off-key. The Europe had NFL Europe and currently has NFL games each year. China and furthermore Asia does not have anything like that. Now, that does not mean that Notre Dame could not gain anything by playing in this game. However, it does seem like their is more risk and burden than any reward. Although, there would be a lot of exposure for a team playing football in China. It would be something to see. Who would watch the game though? Would that many Notre Dame fans travel there?

  1. More of a clarification that "Asia does not have anything like that" - a few years ago, Lou Holtz coached a bunch of Notre Dame alumni players against the Japan national team in the Japan Bowl.

Not exactly the same as the NFL in Europe, but Notre Dame has some pretty recent history in Asia. I also agree that this seems like an odd fit though...

  2. Although this is true, this is a very limited thing and like you said not like NFL Europe, etc.
