Notre Dame Football: Double Standard?

After the arrest of Michael Floyd in 2011 and Tommy Rees, Carlo Calabrese and DaVaris Daniels in 2012, it begs to question whether Notre Dame is what we think it is. Not over emotionally but simply analytically. Is the character of the Notre Dame football team the same as our parents and grandparents?

Academically, yes. Notre Dame scores well in the NCAA's APR and graduation rates. According to an ESPN report, Notre Dame's 97 GSR ranking leads all college football programs. Overall, Notre Dame's athletic program is one of the best in the country academically.

As far as police blotter, Notre Dame is not completely innocent but they are better than most. In 2011, Notre Dame had one highly publicized arrest, Michael Floyd. The team with the highest number of arrests was the University of Florida with 13 arrests and citations. Other teams included Iowa State with 12, Oklahoma (8), Washington State (7), Auburn (6) and Oregon (6).

Sport Illustrated performed a study about the backgrounds of athletes of teams in the Top 25 of 2011. Pittsburgh topped the list with 22 players on their teams charged with crimes. Iowa, Arkansas, Boise State, Penn State, Virginia Tech, Wisconsin, Oklahoma, Florida State and Miami completed the rest of the top 10.

DUI and Alcohol offense are not uncommon. In fact, another great Irish blog, Rakes of Mallow, collected some information on this issue. In this case, it is probably important to remember that these are common even outside of football. But Notre Dame should be different. These players should be suspended for at least one game. One of the reasons, fans and recruits gravitate to Notre Dame is because it is significantly different than other schools.
