Addition By Subtraction: Aaron Lynch

Friday, Lynch decided that he would no longer be with the Notre Dame football team. On the field, this is a huge blow to Notre Dame's defense. He probably was the 2nd best player on the defense. But, following up with an article written earlier this week, Notre Dame will be better off in the long run without Lynch.

There is no way to sugar coat losing a player with top-10 potential like Lynch. But, Lynch was at the pinnacle of what was becoming wrong with Kelly's tenure at Notre Dame. According to a report on Her Loyal Sons, Lynch was an acidic presence in the locker room and on campus. The report claimed, "Lynch had an arrogance about him, carried himself as "better than you" to both non-athletes on campus and his teammates, and that rubbed a lot of people the wrong way. I personally have seen him had to be restrained by teammates when he tried to fight a student for apparently "giving him a weird look". He has this strange, crazy edge to him." This type of player does not belong at Notre Dame.

Lynch appears set to transfer to South Florida. He apparently has tried to reach out to Florida State but they were not responsive to a transfer. The transfer does not make a lot of football sense. Lynch will sit out the 2012 season and then play the 2013 season. Many people around Lynch believe that he will attempt to head the NFL after that. But, scout will only have two years of tape on Lynch. This seems like a situation that may end up turning out very bad for Lynch. He has too much potential. It would be unfortunate to see any individual squander that.

As for Notre Dame, they definitely lose their best defensive linemen. However, they have a lot of depth to soften the blow. Stephon Tuitt, Kapron Lewis-Moore, Chase Hounshell and Sheldon Day. These players should be able to give Notre Dame a solid two-deep at the defensive end position. If Notre Dame lands Issac Rochell for next fall that would give the Fighting Irish another game-breaker at the position.

In the locker room, Brian Kelly will no longer be undermined. At least, fan hope that is not the case. He reported that he had allowed Ishaq Williams to go home earlier for similar reasons to Aaron Lynch. With Davonte Neal, another person who may question if his heart is in South Bend, Kelly and his staff could face similar or worse problems.
