According to the article that follows and a few corroborating reports, Notre Dame has landed James Onwualu from the same high school as several former Irish players including Michael Floyd. This is a big commitment at a big position of need. Here is Onwualu's highlight tape:
From the Saint Paul Pioneer Press:
Cretin-Derham Hall junior all-purpose back James Onwualu has committed to playing football at the University of Notre Dame in the fall of 2013.
Onwualu returned from South Bend, Ind., on Wednesday, March 14, after telling Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly and his staff of his decision.
"Players from Cretin-Derham Hall have had a rich tradition of success at Notre Dame,'' Onwualu said. "I am really excited about playing there in the future.''
Onwualu plans to formally announce his decision Thursday at the St. Paul school.
Onwualu had been making his fourth unofficial visit to South Bend this week, and he brought his older brother, John, a former Cretin-Derham Hall football player. John Onwualu has been a consultant to his brother during the recruiting process.
"Each time I visited Notre Dame, the pull became stronger,'' Onwualu said. "When I visited other schools, I kept comparing them to Notre Dame.''
Onwualu, a 6-foot-2, 205-pound running back and wide receiver, is Minnesota's top-ranked prep recruit entering next season. In addition to Notre Dame, he also had scholarship offers from the Gophers, Purdue, Iowa, Pitt, UCLA and Ohio State.
Onwualu, who has run the 40-yard dash in 4.53 seconds, rushed for 549 yards on 71 carries and scored eight touchdowns last season. He also had 27 receptions for 428 yards and five TDs.
