When Notre Dame offered Bennett Okotcha in December, they were lucky to land Okotcha so quickly after that offer with ease. On Monday night, Notre Dame's luck ran out as Okotcha choose his boyhood dream over the forty year decision. According to several media outlets, this was a very difficult decision for Okotcha who had always dreamed of playing for the Sooners. Further the complicating the situation for Okotcha is the fact that his friend and teammate Cam McDaniel is currently committed to Notre Dame. There is no doubt that Brian Kelly and his staff will try to recover Okotcha. However, the situation appears to be bleak for the Irish.
Even bleaker is the situation that it creates on the depth chart at cornerback. Notre Dame has three scholarships cornerbacks on their roster: Gary Gray, Robert Blanton and Lo Wood. Bennett Jackson reported via twitter on Monday night that he would be moving to defensive back and would be wearing number two. Currently Notre Dame has four defensive backs that Notre Dame believes can play cornerback. However, the situation remains. Going into the season, Notre Dame will have only two cornerbacks with game experience. In the college game today, it is not uncommon to three or four cornerbacks on the field at one period.
Even though Okotchca does not have college experience or is a big-time recruit, his loss is still major for this recruiting class. When you have a small margin of error at position, every commitment and signed letter of intent makes a critical impact.
