Carleton Scott's Decision Affects Notre Dame's 2011-2012 Season

Every year before the draft, NBA Draft analyst Chad Ford produces a list of the Top 100 draft prospects. This year's top prospect according to Ford is former Duke Blue Devil Kyrie Irving. A person who does not appear on that list is Notre Dame's Carleton Scott.

Ford wrote, "Scott isn't really on the NBA radar screen right now...He will likely go undrafted." When Scott placed his name in the NBA Draft earlier this year, it seemed likely that he would withdraw his name,  especially with this type of feedback.

However, Carleton Scott is staying in the NBA Draft shocking both Notre Dame fans and College Basketball analysts. Dick Vitale stated via Twitter that Scott made one of the "wors[t] decisions...as they may go undrafted." ESPN's Andy Katz called it "an odd decision."

Scott's explanation of his decision was quite different than Ford, Vitale or Katz. Scott said, "The feedback really pushed me. Having that feedback and having those guys come up to me and say you really have a chance to make it...I do anticipate (being drafted)."

No major NBA Mock Draft publication has Carleton Scott being selected in either round of the NBA Draft. This could be a poor decision by Scott considering how well Brey develops players. Scott could have become the primary option on Notre Dame's 2011-2012 team.

Now, Notre Dame is left with a void in their starting five and more importantly have lost another player that could give them depth. The following players are probably locks for the starting five:

#0-Eric Atkins
#21-Tim Abromitis
#14-Scott Martin
#45-Jack Cooley

Who can fill the void left by Carleton Scott? Jerian Grant, Joey Brooks and Alex Dragicevich could all be possibilities at the Shooting Guard position. Ultimately, the starting five would have been better with Carleton Scott.
