The "Eye-Ball" Test On Day #1

Notre Dame began Spring Practice today and now die-hard Irish fans are pouring over the limited information about how the 2011 version of the Fighting Irish football looks. There is not a lot that can discerned from simple drills and warm ups. Today, Irish fans got their first look at Freshman Ishaq Williams, Aaron Lynch and Everett Golson.

First look Ishaq, Lynch, Golson from Irish Illustrated on Vimeo.

Williams and Lynch definitely look as advertised. They both look big, long and athletic. Physically, there is no doubt that both players are ready. It is important to note that Lynch is significantly smaller than Ethan Johnson and the other Defensive Ends in the 3-4. Therefore, he'll need to add weight or be used in pass rush situations. Will they catch on mentally in time to contribute against South Florida? Notre Dame fans should have a better idea by the end of Spring Football.

Irish fans also got to take a look at the new helmet cam. Last year, the Irish employed video games to help understand different packages and plays. This year, Kelly and his staff are using a camera mounted on the helmet of the Quarterbacks. Dayne Crist was the first to test out the new device. The device is meant to reveal to the coaches where the Quarterbacks eyes are, therefore, allowing them to determine if they are making the correct reads.

Kelly also hinted towards using Golson and Hendrix in packages that utilize their running and throwing capabilities. Golson clearly looks to be one of the fastest and smoothest athletes that Notre Dame has at the QB position. His delivery is not compact, which will need to be addressed. Hendrix is as advertised. With many people who were in attendance for the being of practice stating that he has a very strong right arm. Kelly added he just needs to "...throw it to our team." With the added QB depth, Notre Dame will be to use the option in their offense. Last year, coaches feared losing one of the Quarterbacks to injury running such plays.

The battle for carries at RB is underway. Kelly said in his post-practice interviews that Cierre Wood has a lot of confidence going into this season, not just on the field but in the classroom as well. Jonas Gray, Wood's backup, definitely has shown all the tools needed to be a great running back. Kelly said that he "...just want[s] consistency". Sophomore Cameron Roberson is not ready to enter the mix at RB but will be given the opportunity to learn this spring.

Two players that stood out on day one were Prince Shembo and Robert Blanton. Shembo has developed in coverage. Blanton brings a physical presence to the cornerback position. What does the development of Prince Shembo mean for the Irish defense? Time will tell.
