The QB Situation: "Quick Conclusions By Irish Fans"

A lot has been stated already about the Notre Dame Quarterback situation and reps in Spring Practice have not been taken yet. Many fans have already written off Nate Montana and Luke Massa as the two odd men out in the "Kelly Quarterback Derby". Let's take a closer look at the situation without names.

QB #1: 3-Star Recruit, No experience.
QB #2: 3-Star Recruit, No experience.
QB #3: 5-Star Recruit, 2163 yards, 16 touchdowns, 8 interceptions.
QB #4: NR, 116 yards, 0 touchdowns, 1 interception.
QB #5: 3-Star Recruit, 1106 yards, 12 touchdowns, 8 interceptions.
QB #6: 4-Star Recruit, No experience.

For arguments sake, assume that everyone is healthy and able to play, which has been assumed by Brian Kelly. If I was making the decisions, I would select QB #3 as my starter because this quarterback appears to protect the ball the best with a 2:1 touchdown/interception ratio. Being a 5-star recruit, the QB demonstrates a great deal of talent. QB #5 would definitely be my back up. The QB demonstrates excellent experience for a back up. Selecting the next two QBs is a difficult task. Kelly could choose to experience or potential. At this point in the program, I would select potential. Therefore, QB #6 would be decision for the third slot. Now, the final spot is between QB #1 and QB #2. It would be necessary to let these two recruits battle it out to see who deserves the spot.

I think it is important to remember that the QBs selected to take reps in practice will still be there next year to compete again. There may only be four QBs depending on graduation and whether or not Dayne Crist would take a 5th year. I think the "loser" in the derby could transfer if they think they are likely to play somewhere else (similar to Zach Frasier in 2007).
